This woman is absolutely wonderful and if you know her, Barbara, tell her that I applaud her 100 per cent. And please thank her for me. In my humble opinion, she was doing God's will.

Can anyone tell me how this display was not considered hate speech no matter what this guy said? It was a skeleton dressed as as Santa... on a Cross... and not considered hate speech?

Good for her!! Thank you, very brave lady! I hope she isn't charged with any crime. "Vandalizing" was an incorrect term, used by the newswoman. She didn't harm the display, she just placed it on the ground. I find it ironic that the atheist who opposes any religious displays, has no trouble with a big cross on the lawn, as long as that cross is being mocked and desecrated. And I just can't help but wonder what the reaction would be to a mocking or desecrating of Mohammad. I bet the authorities wouldn't allow that. And Muslims who took such a display down would do it violently, not gently, as this lady did. You live in a crazy place, Barbara!

And note that the atheist said that "offensiveness is in the eye of the beholder." In other words, the lady found the display offensive, but he didn't. Well that works both ways. He may find a Nativity Scene offensive, but most people don't. Perhaps he should just avert his eyes. If he complains about any religious display, someone should just give him his own words back: "offensiveness is in the eye of the beholder."

Bias appears in the headline "Woman TEARS down." Um, no, she didn't "tear" it down. She dismantled it gently and laid it on the ground. She was even careful not to rip the suit. And vandalism is when something is defaced or destroyed, not simply taken down. With that definition, every year after Christmas, we "vandalize" our tree by removing the trimming.

Good for her! If that's civil disobedience, than you go girl! We as a nation are really messed up when we value this kind of garbage. What's next, Santa in bondage?

I'm with you, Jennifer - changed my headline. I caught the vandalizing misnomer but missed that. Thanks.

I was offended by the display. I am offended that people have no trouble using the cross this way, but would never allow any other religious symbol to be so desecrated. One of your other commenters got it right - if it had been a Muslim symbol, it would most likely never have been allowed in the first place. Had it been allowed, it would have been destroyed immediately.

I appreciated this woman's gentleness in taking down the display. She was very careful to not damage any of the parts of it, taking the time to disentangle the Santa suit from the arm of the cross. (I guess it is in vandalism only in the sense that she took the display down. In my mind vandalism is far more destructive.)

On a completely different level, as a parent, this disturbs me. I have children who are upset by the increasingly gruesome Halloween displays we see in our area. I have to anticipate and warn them of displays that I know may upset them, so they can turn their eyes away, or close them. Seeing a skeleton in a Santa suit would just mess with their heads. I think these adults who are so bent on their free speech clearly aren't thinking of the impact on the kids who see these sorts of displays.

I can't help but wonder after reading these posts. First, I don't really have a problem w/what this lady did. BUT. To call it hate speech. Our country is headed down a slippery slope w/that. That seems to be right along w/being PC. And guess who that typically gets applied to? Seems like the Christians. In today's society, we are being told it's hate speech to oppose homosexuality. I don't know - just a concern to me. Especially when Cardinals of the Catholic church are saying Catholics may be persecuted for their faith in the not too distant future.

Michelle, I'm not sure what you mean by the hate speech part so I'll just clarify what I meant.

I consider putting the skeleton in a Santa suit on a cross to be the hate speech. I don't believe for one nanosecond what the guy said about the death of Christmas through commercialism, etc. He was being obnoxious and mocking Christians for wanting to put up Nativity scenes. Would I prosecute him? No but I definitely think the guy has issues with Christianity.
