Obama goes to church to prove Christian creds
You can tell it's campaign time:The last time Obama went to church was for Easter in April.President Barack Obama with first lady Michelle Obama, left, and their daughters Sasha and Malia, right, walk from the White House in Washington to attend a Sunday service at nearby St. John's Church, Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011. (AP Photo/Manuel Balce Ceneta)"Take that, ye governors alleging a war on religion." wrote Todd Gillman of the Dallas Morning News in his pool report of the White House after reporting President Obama's remarks for the 'Christmas in Washington' special at the White House.
Gilman was referring to Texas Governor Rick Perry's recent campaign ad vowing to end Obama's "war on religion.
President Obama publicly attended church on Sunday, and spoke about Christ's birth during a Christmas concert program that included Jennifer Hudson, The Band Perry, and Justin Bieber.
President Obama reminded everyone there that "the manifestation of God's love" Jesus Christ was born more than 2000 years ago.

I was doing some research for a talk I have to give on Church and Politics and found that Ronald Reagan attended Sunday Church only once in his eight years in the White House. He did attend some funerals and a wedding or two, but only one Sunday, the more or less obligatory visit to Saint John's Episcopal Lafayette Square, the "Church of the Presidents." I also found out that one occasion at an Episcopal Church—and it may have been this visit to Saint John’s, my source did not name the church, he and Nancy went forward to take communion. Seeing the other communicants take a host from the priest and then intinct it the chalice carried by an assistant priest before receiving it, President Reagan was unclear on the concept. When he knelt at the rail the took the host and then when the assistant priest came along with the chalice, the President dropped the host into the Precious Blood thinking that is what Holy Communion was about. He didn’t even know that the point of Holy Communion is to eat and drink the Lord’s Body and Blood. Of course, not having ever been much of a church goer, his religious faith was a bit of what he could pick up here and there.

Patrick -
If you're trying to clear Obama from charges of hypocrisy by pointing to Reagan's lack of church-going, you have defeated your purpose. Reagan was no hypocrite. If he didn't want to go to church, he didn't go to church. Obama, who goes to church when the political tides warrant it - just like he uses our military for photo ops while hanging them out to dry - is a hypocrite through and through.
Dittos regarding your description of Reagan's not knowing the proper way to receive communion. And btw, in the Episcopal church, it is not the Precious Body and Blood because Episcopalians do not believe in transubstantiation and their priests are not in the line of succession.
I always find it rather lame that Obama defenders must resort to this kind of comparison. A man is noble in his own right or he is not noble. Obama is not noble, but a shameless politician who cares only about his own power and will.
