Political cartoons - teach your children

This comment came in today from Brenda on a blog post from a couple years ago:

I go to a public school in Florida and unfortunately, they do not teach us anything about political cartoons. I am a Junior in High School and they have never given me or any of my friends, any incentives to do so. I finally got to do a class with a college professor this year who gave us a project to look up a political cartoon and told us to be aware of current events.

So it seems like a good idea to run it again. Political cartoons are too important to skip in the education of our children. If the schools aren't teaching this, we parents need to:

From Creators Syndicate. The artist is Gary Varvel and you can access all his political cartoons - and many other artists - at Creators.com.

Political cartoons are a great way to teach your children about the issues. I am always amazed by the ability of artists to sum up a situation in a single frame that would take me 1000 words.

Oh, that's right - a picture is worth a thousand words!

Seriously, moms and dads. I still remember in elementary school when we were introduced to political cartoons. Don't know if they are teaching this in public school anymore (do me a favor - ask your kids and let me know).

Don't forget to teach your kids. Look at the cartoon and discuss what it means. After a while, they will start to get it on their own. And who knows? You might have a budding political cartoonist under your wing.

Barbara,
Love the political cartoon! World magazine puts out some publications for kids called " God's world news" and I've seen some cute political cartoons in the 5th-6th grade version... This is an awesome publication, by the way... www.gwnews.com

Also, slightly off topic, but I was wondering what resources you used to teach your children the electoral process? I just ordered this book from amazon: http://www.amazon.com/See-How-They-Run-Campaign/dp/B004J8HUFM/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1346426707&sr=1-2&keywords=see+how+they+run

It was wondering if you or your readers have any other suggestions for teaching about elections?

A great web site for kids (and adults!) is http://www.studentnewsdaily.com/

My 13 yo is big into politics. I have this set as his homepage. He has been reading it for a couple of years, although it says it is for high school students. They mostly take the summer off, so he is always happy when the school year starts again. Nice, simple, but informative web site. They feature a political cartoon every Friday with questions and answers about the cartoon. Lots more happening on this web site. Not sure where I discovered it, but I highly recommend it.
