Once upon a time there was a retard
If you're shocked to read that title, you're not alone. Still, despite the controversy surrounding a movie which promoted itself with that tagline, thousands of people streamed into theaters to catch the opening of Tropic Thunder last weekend. The movie has already spawned a new catchphrase/Tshirt slogan: Never go full...August 19, 2008 - 9:02 AM | Permalink | Comments (8) | TrackBack
For Christians in the entertainment industry
Got kids in the performing arts? Knowing I have a few, Judy sent me a link to InterMission: WHAT IS INTERMISSION? Founded in 1987, INTERMISSION is a dynamic and unique organization that has its finger on the pulse of the entertainment industry. It is comprised of more than 5000 entertainment...July 11, 2008 - 9:34 AM | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBack
WALL-E - Pixar does it again!
Having raised kids in the 80s and still raising them today, I'm here to tell you that one of the major perks of being a parent now is kids' movies. Every parent I know looks forward to the next Pixar film, holding our breaths: Bugs? Fish? Cars? Robots? Can they...July 5, 2008 - 10:24 PM | Permalink | Comments (16) | TrackBack
The Baby Borrowers - your thoughts
Barbara, I wondered what you think of this show. I've looked all over, and haven't seen anyone who shares my concern, so maybe I'm crazy, I don't know. Mom Houston, a mommy blog in the Houston Chronicle, has been going on and on about how she loves the show...June 28, 2008 - 8:16 AM | Permalink | Comments (17) | TrackBack

Oprah finds the New Age, ditches a Savior

Barbara Curtis Crosswalk.com Contributing Writer If you haven't run into it before, it would be hard to avoid it now. American Idols sing Shout to the Lord!
The most-watched show on television gave praise where praise was due last week, singing Shout to the Lord. In the Wednesday night version, Jesus was edited out of the song: the lyrics said "My shepherd, my Savior." Still - not exactly something you'd expect to see on a show that...April 13, 2008 - 11:28 AM | Permalink | Comments (5) | TrackBack
American Idol
I didn't comment on last week because I didn't find the show that interesting. The first Beatles songbook night (March 11) was so rich - and such a great reminder of the Fab Four's unmatchable creativity - that they decided to run it a second week. Big mistake. No...March 26, 2008 - 1:18 PM | Permalink | Comments (3) | TrackBack
Shirley Temple - just because
Thank God for YouTube which is keeping bits and pieces of American cultural history alive and available. Don't know what made me think of Shirley Temple tonight, but in case you haven't thought of her for a while either: Get on Board Polly Wolly Doodle Paul Harvey: Nobody could have...March 6, 2008 - 11:07 PM | Permalink | Comments (2) | TrackBack
American Idol - week 3
Top of the night for me was Jason Castro singing Hallelujah. Leonard Cohen wrote this way back when - 60's? 70's? Jeff Buckley covered it quite beautifully. And most recently, it was popularized as background in an angst-filled Shrek scene. There are lots of versions on YouTube. I think my...March 4, 2008 - 11:02 PM | Permalink | Comments (2) | TrackBack
American Idol - the best part
Forgot to say - The best part of the competition has to be those fabulous back-up singers and the band - especially that older guy who plays blues guitar. Amazing how they handle multiple arrangements for all those singers, week after week and make each one shine. I just love...February 28, 2008 - 9:56 PM | Permalink | Comments (1) | TrackBack
American Idol - week 2
David Archeluta was AWESOME!!!! And I'm guessing he's a Christian - his jettisoning of the first verses of John Lennon's "Imagine" was telling. And made the song so much more positive and in keeping with a Christian worldview. And what a doll - so sweet and humble and filled...February 28, 2008 - 1:33 PM | Permalink | Comments (11) | TrackBack
Sesame Street - not the same old neighborhood
From yesterday's Washington Times - which I didn't have time to read, but my hubby - who cares about my readers too! - wanted us to see: Nostalgia street February 24, 2008 By Karen Goldberg Goff Ah, the good old days, when children played in vacant lots, ate trans...February 25, 2008 - 6:31 AM | Permalink | Comments (1) | TrackBack
American Idol - first thoughts on Season 7
Maddy, Jonny and I have been true blue fans of American Idol since it began, with other family members joining us here and there through the years. I think this season is looking pretty good. I appreciated that the auditions were much more family friendly this year. Lat year there...February 21, 2008 - 11:46 PM | Permalink | Comments (3) | TrackBack
The Golden Compass - Take 2
Because I forgot to highlight the email I received, it may have looked as though I wrote the warning about The Golden Compass and suggested boycotting it. I did not write it as I have neither seen the movie nor read the books. I've gone back to fix the highlighting...November 10, 2007 - 7:00 AM | Permalink | Comments (4) | TrackBack
What Not to Wear and a couple other TV favorites
Our TV was turned off for the last five months, but we just had it turned back on. We don't watch the major networks or sitcoms or dramas. I did watch House for a while, but got tired of the same old schtick. I don't let my kids watch sitcoms...November 8, 2007 - 3:13 PM | Permalink | Comments (4) | TrackBack
